Summer Together 2019: A Success for Port Families
Summer Together is a wholly volunteer-run program that funds summer camp scholarships and public-pool memberships for Port Washington families in need of economic assistance.
In the program’s second year in 2019 Summer Together funded 83 family pool memberships at Manorhaven Park and 25 campers who attended one week of specialized camps in dance, sports, science and music.
Summer Together is organized by Long Island Together (LIT), a group of community activists working to improve access to educational and enrichment opportunities for children, among other social justice causes. Supporting organizations include The Community Synagogue Social Action Committee, Littig House, Our Lady of Fatima Social Outreach, Padres en Accion Asociacion, Parent Resource Center, Reconstructionist Synagogue of the North Shore, St. Peter of Alcantara Social Ministry, St. Stephen’s Church Outreach Ministry, Temple Beth Israel Social Action Committee and the United Methodist Church PW.
Summer Together works closely with the Town of North Hempstead to implement the family pool memberships.
Summer Together’s wholly volunteer staff raises money by way of events and an online donation page at summertogether.longislandtogether.org. In 2019, more than 90 local donors supported the program and it was awarded a grant from the Greentree Foundation Good Neighbor Fund. Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Camps that have participated to date include Bach to Rock, Berest Dance Center, Blue Moon Project, Camp Invention, Parent Resource Center, PYA Hoops and Unlimited Sports Action. Campers and families are referred to the program through community service organizations including Littig House, the Parent Resource Center, PW Public Library ESOL and Parent Child Home Program, Our Lady of Fatima Social Outreach and St. Peter of Alcantara Social Ministry.
Summer Together supports children of all faiths, races, ethnicities and backgrounds.
